About Standing Committees

Purpose and Functions

Standing Committees are statutory bodies formed under the Panchayati Raj Act to ensure focused attention on different areas of development and governance. Each committee consists of elected Panchayat members and is responsible for:

  • Detailed examination of subjects within their domain
  • Making recommendations to the Gram Panchayat
  • Monitoring implementation of approved schemes
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability

Committee Meetings

Each committee meets at least quarterly to review progress, discuss issues, and plan activities. Minutes of all meetings are recorded and presented to the full Gram Panchayat for approval.

Composition Norms

  • Each committee has 5-7 members from elected representatives
  • Chairpersons are elected by committee members
  • Adequate representation of women and SC/ST members
  • Ex-officio members as per state guidelines
